31/10/2010 Looking for inspiration ...... and finding it.
I have found myself watching TV quite a bit these past few weeks... Here are a few of the programmes I have been watching and hope to fins inspiration from: Downtown Abbey (yes, yes, I know, very one who's trendy hates it but I am a sucker for period dramas and an avid student of most things about 19th century / early 20th century England ... on iplayer without the ads, of course!) Mark Gatiss' A History of Horrorand his First Men on The Moon. Mr Gatiss' adaptation of Agatha Christie's Halloween party Edgar Allan Poe: Love, Death and Women I made the mistake of watching the HG Wells drama with Martin Sheen, HG Wells: War with the World. This was so pathetic I almost stopped... What about the writing? What about his inspiration? It was all about his (failed and rather sad) relationships with various, equally sad women. All very grotesque. Also, I found aural solace in the intensity of the music of Swans (at Koko in Camden). Michael Gira is such a force of nature, a truly admirable and charismatic character. I also went to the London Metropolitan archives for a reading by Chris Fowler, one of my favourite authors... He read two excellent short stories including one he had written the day before. THE DAY BEFORE! Just like this! Needless to say it gave me a good old nudge and therefore, I have decided to ignore the writer's block and keep trying until it comes at last... I am now on about 64,000 words. The competition I want to enter requires 80,000 to 150,000 words... Before December 25th, I need to finish the novel and edit the first draft... This is scary. 22/10/2010 My cure for writer's blockI am fleeing to Devon for a few days... I have been gripped by writer's block and I don't like it one bit... Back next week!
