30/3/2012 Back to the books...After a week spent working, I am now back to the books. I am hoping to have the next few weeks free in order to make real progress. It has been very slow so far, as I have to get myself back in the mood. I want the scenes to be very atmospheric, which is not easy when you've spent 4 whole days checking some educational digital products! Not very conducive to writing supernatural events occurring in 1925! I have started writing again on The Book of Thoth - some crucial scenes which are really not easy to write... Things are kicking off big time now! I have been using a piece of rather gorgeous Victorian insect jewellery for a scene. And this weekend, I am hoping to start work in earnest on the cover design (and blurb) for the forthcoming (self-publication) of I Am a Muse.
I am still rather nervous about this, especially about the formatting of the manuscript... I just want it to be really good, and I want to add a few illustrations too. 27/3/2012 On Life...I found this porter this morning and I liked it so much that I am reposting it here.
This is what I have been fighting all my life, and so far, I'm winning. Of course, you have to find the best compromise - especially where money is concerned. But if you THINK and are responsible for your own choices (which could be too much effort and look too scary for some), then you're pretty much there. If people didn't feel pressurised into this mould, they would be much happier and satisfied! Life is too short to waste it being an enslaved lobotomised robot fearful of the future! Carpe Diem. 23/3/2012 The Dark Side!So I am back writing The Book of Thoth, which means spending the whole day trying to scare myself with ghosts and Egyptian curses. This is so much fun to write! Fittingly, I have come across the trailer for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows... I have never enjoyed a trailer so much! This is going to be wonderful! I am a big Tim Burton "fan". I think he is one of the most original movie directors around... I will be literally RUNNING to the cinema in May! This Saturday 24th March, it is the Betty Blue Vintage Handmade and Vintage fair in Leigh-on-Sea. This is an excellent event and this first one of the year promises to be absolutely packed-full of great traders (70 stalls!). I will be taking a break away from my desk and I will be helping Matt ArtPix on his stall. Matt has worked really hard on new designs and will have quite a few new images on display! Matt has also started selling some second hand books related to the Dazzling Decades series (cinema and TV, comics...) and to his always popular Retro Football series! The books have been really popular so far... Very encouraging... The Dazzling Decades series (with the brand new 1920s design!) (we have 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s! on foamboard posters, cards and a few one-off frames!) The new I Love cards! The lovely LOVE series (for the romantics among you!) 21/3/2012 Cut, cut number 2It took me 4 days (!) but the 5th draft of I Am a Muse is now ready!
I have cut the 93,000 words manuscript to 88,500. Of course, it is not completely ready to publish yet: I need to study the formatting and various instructions on the Lulu.com website. It looks horrendously complicated. Now I am going back to The Book of Thoth and I am hoping to write a bit more this week before work stops me in my tracks again. 17/3/2012 The willow treeWillow trees have fascinated me since I was a child. I have always loved them, and when I started writing my first novel, I Am a Muse, I decided to feature one in the book. It appears as early as the first chapter.
The house inhabited by one of my characters is called Willow Hill. The willow tree at the bottom of the garden is a recurrent element in the narrative, a sort of focus point. I might add an illustrated willow tree to the pages of my book. I have found a few examples of what I have in mind... The willow tree is rich in symbolism and is present in cultures and religions across the world. It is mainly associated with death and mourning, communication with the dead, reflection, inner vision, dreams, healing and femininity. 17/3/2012 And... Cut!Today, I am working on I Am a Muse and making cuts to the text. I need to bring the word count down, but this is not an easy task... It breaks my heart to get rid of sentences and paragraphs!
I will be keeping the full version on file, though... These are the final stages... It is getting rather exciting! 15/3/2012 FREE WEEK!From tomorrow, I might have a whole week to work on my books. First time since November! Now, there will be someone to send me some work, won't it?
